Let’s have a look at some upcoming mobile phones, which are purported to be releases with Android’s forthcoming OS – Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 (due out in Oct/Nov 2011).
Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Also known as Google Nexus Prime, Samsung GT-I9250)
Estimated release date: Early November 2011 (~Around November 3rd)

The highly awaited first showcase device to sport the brand new Google Android 4.0 OS.

Originally planned to be released on October 11 at the CTIA Enterprise and Applications 2011 conference in San Diego, California, and then delayed for any number of reasons including “out of respect” for the passing of Steve Jobs, intensive competition from the iPhone 4S launch, and patent problems from Apple.

Recently a  Verizon employee has allegedly confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy Prime (Nexus Prime) will be released on Verizon Wireless on November 3, which means Samsung and/or Google will be officially announcing the Nexus Prime anytime before November 3.

Sure to be many more but these are the first Android 4.0 mobile phones to be released with the ice cream sandwich OS that we can look forward too.

Next in a long line of leaks the audio files for the forthcoming Nexus Prime has be pulled from Ice Cream Sandwich by P3Droid. The pack includes alarms, notifications, ringtones, and UI sound clips.

The latest of many leaks to come from the forthcoming Nexus Prime phone and Ice Cream Sandwich system, are these default wallpapers for the Nexus Prime.

Bright, colorful and fetching all these wallpapers appear to be brand new apart from the canyon wallpaper, which is found on older Android versions.

The wallpapers are 960×853, so users of the newer Android phones may see some stretching.

We are still hoping and waiting for a release of the wallpapers in 720p, which we guess will come with the long await release of Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0!

In early August it was reported that the Ice Cream Sandwich release date was likely to be this October, according to an anonymous source.

On the 7th September during a keynote interview at Dreamforce ’11, Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt revealed that Ice Cream Sandwich would be introduced in the October/November timeframe.

On the 7th October, a placeholder page on Youtube confirmed the Ice Cream Sandwich release date as 11 October 2011. Samsung’s Unpacked event was scheduled for this day, which was widely expected to see the launch of the Nexus Prime, the first mobile handset to sport the updated Android version.

The same day however saw the cancellation of the event, with a statment released by Samsung and Google stating “It is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.” The postponement of the event most likely caused by the fear of the iPhone 4S release stealing it’s media spotlight, along with out of respect for the death earlier in the week of Apple founder Steve Jobs.

The current rumour on ice cream sandwhich’s launch date, is October 27th. It is rumoured Google and Samsung may move the Nexus Prime Launch date to this date, in an event in London. However this also appears dubious as the date clashes with Nokia World, also in London on 26-27th of October.

The launch of Samsung Nexus Prime, the latest smartphone based on Google’s new version of the Android operating system Ice Cream Sandwich, will be delayed reportedly to pay respect to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who passed away last week on Oct. 5

Initially, Samsung had scheduled to release Nexus Prime at its Mobile Unpack event in San Diego on Tuesday (Oct. 11). However, Jobs suddenly passed away on Oct. 5, which stirred sadness and grief around the world. Samsung, the biggest rival and parts supplier of Apple, also showed its honor for Jobs in its own way by deciding to postpone the launch of Nexus Prime.
“We decided it (Oct. 11 event) was not the right time to announce a new product while the world was expressing tribute to Steve Jobs’s passing,” a Samsung spokesman said.

So far the Korean company hasn’t decided on a new date and venue for the release, according to the spokesman
But some analysts and IT bloggers are suspecting that there might be some true reasons behind the postponement. It is well-known that Samsung and Apple have long-term legal battle with each other, and which is still intensifying.

The two tech giants have been suing one another in 20 cases filed in 10 countries since April. The increasing confrontation makes Samsung’s honor for Jobs like crocodile tears somehow.

According to some experts, Samsung might be waiting for a better timing to maximize the effect of the launch of Nexus Prime, especially as iPhone 4S has achieved unprecedented pre-order record – one million units were sold out within first 24 hours.
The delay seems aimed at avoiding a direct battle with the iPhone 4S, which “is enjoying a bigger-than-expected halo effect of Steve Jobs,” an analyst at HMCInvestment & Securities in Seoul Greg Roh said.

However, “They might have needed more time to test the new Ice Cream Sandwich operating system,” he continued.
Samsung and Google also might want to refine their new product, for they had seen iPhone 4S made the fans disappointed at first.

“If the iPhone 4S were overwhelmingly good, Samsung wouldn’t have changed its schedule. It would have gone with the schedule, regardless of his death,” an analyst at Mirae Asset Securities, Lee Soon-hak said. “By delaying the launch, it can have more time to fine-tune its new product.”

As officially announced during the 2011 Google I/O, the upcoming 4.x version of Android is called Ice Cream Sandwich, a combination of Gingerbread and Honeycomb into a “cohesive whole”. It was planned to be released on October 11th, but the release date was postponed out of respect for the death of Steve Jobs. Android Head of Engineering, Mike Claren called it the company’s “most ambitious release to date.” Features include facial recognition and new APIs to reduce development fragmentation.

To date, there is evidence of:
- the unification of phone and tablet UIs and APIs
- several reports of devices claiming to be Android 4.0 devices popping up suggesting that Ice Cream Sandwich will be a major Android version increase.

On September 28, 2011, a video that was posted by Engadget (and subsequently reposted on YouTube) was taken by an eBay shopper who bought a Nexus S and ended up getting a Nexus S with a developer build of this release installed on it. According to Engadget, his phone was remotely locked and wiped shortly after that video was posted.

On October 7, 2011, Android Community posted a screenshot gallery taken from a video possibly showing off the Google Nexus Prime, and the gallery included a screenshot of the About Phone section of the Settings app confirming that this release is indeed Android 4.0

An event based around the Nexus Prime and Ice Cream Sandwich was going to be held on October 11, 2011, but has since been postponed, due to Steve Jobs’s death.
